Dragon Ltd environmental policy

Introduction and aim

Dragon ltd is an independent advertising agency and like all businesses, our operations have an environmental impact. We are working hard to reduce emissions and waste from our business and to encourage greener behaviour among our employees. Our commitment to measure, manage and reduce our carbon footprint is reviewed by one of our clients Clear Offsetting. Who also offset all the unavoidable carbon that we produce during the course of our activities. This policy describes how we will achieve our aim.

Responsibility

This environmental policy applies to all of our operations including management, office services and deliveries. Ian Cruickshank is responsible for ensuring that the policy is implemented. However, all employees have a responsibility in their area to ensure that the aims and objectives of the policy are met. As a company we're committed to providing training for our staff so that we all work in accordance with this policy and within an environmentally aware culture;

Initiatives already in place

  • Legislation
    • Comply with all relevant environmental legislation, regulations and approved codes of practice;
  • Transport
    • Promote cycling with secure bike racks and showers in the office
    • Communicate the cycle to work scheme
    • Employees are encouraged to walk or cycle before using public transport. We do not offer company cars for our staff.
    • Engaged a carbon neutral courier service
    • Implemented video conferencing to reduce need for flights
  • Water
    • Rainwater harvesting and the water collected irrigates the roof gardens and is plumbed in to flush the toilets (London only)
    • Wind turbines power the irrigation. (London only)
    • The taps have flow restrictors on and the toilets have eco-friendly smaller cisterns.
  • Waste
    • Provide recycling bins in every office for paper, glass, cardboard and plastic bottles
  • Energy
    • Solar panels heat the hot water in the buildings (London only)
    • Flooring from recycled rubber tyres and counter tops from recycled yoghurt cartons (great idea but not very practical!). The office chairs are 50% made from recycled materials and 100% recyclable. (London only)
    • Low energy lamps
  • Low Carbon days
    • Every employee is encouraged to work from home once a month to help reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Carbon Offset
    • We use a Government QAS accredited company (Clear) to offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated by our activities using the Kyoto recommended CER's rather than less efficienct VER's.

Additional targets for 2011

During 2011 we aim to:

  • Inform all customers and suppliers about our environmental policy by August 2011 and, thereafter, all new customers and suppliers
  • Define good housekeeping for paper and ink use, ensure all employees receive training in good housekeeping by August 2011 and incorporate this training into the induction programme for new starters
  • Introduce a paper and ink management system to reduce the amount of paper used and waste ink being disposed of by December 2011
  • Reduce energy usage by 5% against previous years levels

Monitoring and auditing

Progress against these objectives will be monitored through quarterly management meetings where;

  • paper and ink volume purchases will be recorded and mapped against previous levels on a half yearly basis
  • Energy levels will be monitored on a half yearly basis
  • The policy statement will be regularly reviewed and updated as necessary. The management team endorses these policy statements and is fully committed to their implementation.
